How the degassing station in Dnipro works

One of the biggest environmental problems in Ukraine is frequent fires at landfills. They are caused by methane that forms in the landfills. This problem can be avoided. What’s more, landfill gas can be useful.

In Dnipro, a 1 MW biogas power plant has been operating at the Right Bank solid waste landfill since last November. "Enerho Sich" LLC, which built and operates it, is part of the "Clear Energy" group of companies.

This is the most modern and one of the most powerful stations in Ukraine. The gas released during the decomposition of waste is pumped around the clock through wells located throughout the solid waste landfill and transported through pipes to gas filters, and then burned to produce electricity.

"The plant pumps almost 90% of the landfill gas—a mixture of methane and other gases, including sulfur compounds, which is harmful to humans—from the body of the landfill," says energy engineer Denys Deineho.

Almost 17,000 cubic meters of harmful gas are utilized per day. And residents of the surrounding areas can finally breathe a sigh of relief—the smells from the landfill have practically disappeared.
