Main new buildings of the country: NV has determined the top 10 infrastructure projects in Ukraine

Novoye Vremya (The New Times) magazine, with the help from the representatives of the Ministry of Infrastructure, the State Agency of Automobile Roads and Ukrainian Railways, as well as a number of regional administrations, created a list of the ten most large-scale and interesting infrastructure projects in Ukraine that are being implemented today and will be completed in the coming years.

1. Gо Highway

Project cost: 82,8 billion UAH ($3 billion)

Project duration: the project started in 2017, the first stage should be completed in 2020.

Go Highway is a four-lane highway that connects two ports – Odessa and Polish Gdańsk (hence the abbreviation GO). It will connect Ukrainian Black Sea ports with Polish and German ports in the Baltic sea.

The Ukrainian part of the highway, which will become part of the European Transport System, will pass from Krakovets through Lviv, Ternopil, Khmelnytskyi, Vinnytsia, and Uman.

In order to finance the project, the State Agency is negotiating with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

2. Highway N-31 Dnipro-Tsarychanka-Kobeliaky-Reshetylivka

Project cost: 17,7 billion UAH

Project duration: 2017-2021

Until recently, 146 km of broken asphalt connecting Reshetylivka urban-type settlement (located on the Kyiv-Poltava highway) with Dnipro city was considered a regional road. After the renovation, it will become a full-fledged four-lane national highway. It will become possible to drive from Dnipro to the capital in just five hours (instead of the current seven hours at best).

The highway will have cement concrete lanes, two-level interchanges that are currently being built in Poltava region, and roads bypassing large villages (Petrykivka, Mogilev, and Tsarychanka).

3. Extension of Metro Line III in Kharkiv

Project cost: about 12 billion UAH (387 million EUR)

Project duration: 2019-2022

The project is financed by loans from the EBRD and the European Investment Bank. It provides for the construction of a 3.47 km metro section with two stations – Derzhavinska and Odeska, as well as the Oleksiivske electric depot with a connecting branch line of 0.79 km.

As part of this project, Kharkiv Metro will also purchase 85 cars, which will save up to 30 million UAH per year on electricity.

4. Completion of metro construction in Dnipro

Project cost: 9,48 billion UAH (304 million EUR)

Project duration: 2017-2023

The new metro section will connect the existing metro line with the city center.

Three new stations will be opened on the line: Teatralna, Tsentralna and Muzeina. The contract for their design was won by the world’s leading architectural studio Zaha Hadid Architects: the British will design entrances and ticket halls, as well as train departure platforms.

5. Electrification of the Dolynska – Mykolaiv – Kolosivka railway line

Project cost: 9,45 billion UAH

Project duration: 2019-2023 The section connects the main railway lines of the country with the port of Mykolaiv.

According to Yevhen Kravtsov, acting Chairman of the Board of the state-owned enterprise Ukrainian Railways, electrification of this 253 km stretch of railway line will significantly increase the speed of cargo delivery to the sea. On top of this, transportation by electric locomotives is three times more efficient than by diesel locomotives.

The project is divided into two phases. Electrification of the Dolynska – Mykolaiv section (148 km) will take place from March 2019 to May 2023, and as for the 105 km section to Kolosivka, the works will begin in June 2019 (and will be completed in October 2021).

6. Odessa International Airport. Construction of a new runway

Project cost: 3,6 billion UAH

Project duration: 2017-2022

The current runway at Odessa airport is one of the worst in terms of surface quality in Eastern Europe.

In 2017, construction of a new one with the same length of 2.8 km was started. But its capabilities surpass twice the current ones, which will allow the airport to handle heavy aircraft (including Boeing 767). As a result, according to the Ministry of Infrastructure, passenger flow will also double.

7. N-08 Zaporizhia-Mariupol road section renovation and major repair

Project cost: 2,8 billion UAH

Project duration: 2018-2022

According to Oleksandr Kava from the State Agency of Automobile Roads, Zaporizhia-Mariupol road is the only major road that connects the Pryazovia industrial center with the rest of Ukraine. Today, it forms 209 km of broken asphalt, of which about 40 km was renovated in 2018. The road as a whole hasn’t seen major repairs for the past quarter century.

8. Bila Tserkva International Airport

Project cost: 1,5 billion UAH (50 million EUR) (at the initial stage)

Project duration: 2019-2023 (first stage)

According to Oleksandra Klitina, Adviser to the Minister of Infrastructure, the Bila Tserkva Airport project is part of an initiative to develop regional airports.
The Ministry of Infrastructure chose the airport in Bila Tserkva as their pilot project. There is already a military airstrip there, and it’s in good condition.

The first stage of the project will be the opening of a cargo complex. The second step will be the building of the passenger terminal.

9. Waste processing plant in Lviv and landfill reclamation in Hrybovychi

Project duration: 2019-2021

Project cost: 1,09 billion UAH (35 million EUR)

In 2018, Lviv signed an investment agreement to raise funds for the solution of the waste crisis problem. For 35 million euros, allocated by the EBRD and other international donors, Lviv will build a plant for deep processing of municipal waste and carry out landfill reclamation in Hrybovychi.
The plant, which will be located on the outskirts of the city, will use mechanical and biological processing technology which allows not only to sort waste for recycling, but also to compost organic waste. Plant capacity will be 240 thousand tons of waste per year (when working on a double-shift basis).

The project is currently at the tender stage. If the matter is successful and is completed in due time, construction will start this year.

10. Waste processing complex in Kharkiv region

Project cost: 1,1 billion UAH

Project duration: 2017-2019

In Derhachi district near Kharkiv, not just a plant for processing solid municipal waste, but a whole complex is being built. It includes a sorting line and a system for collecting landfill gas at several landfills. Gas is planned to be processed into electricity and transferred to the network of the state-owned company Ukrenergo.

A key part of the project is the construction of a modern sanitary bioreactor landfill. Its design eliminates the possibility of fires, as well as the ingress of filtrate into groundwater.

Plant capacity amounts to 400 thousand tons of solid municipal waste per year. The new landfill is designed for more than ten years of operation.
